Pada bulan Juni 2002, ketika Korea Selatan terjebak dalam hiruk pikuk olahraga saat tim sepak bola nasional bermain melawan Turki untuk tempat ketiga di Piala Dunia FIFA 2002, angkatan laut Korea Utara mengerahkan dua kapal patroli mereka menuju Garis Batas Utara, sebuah maritim yang disengketakan perbatasan dekat Pulau Yeonpyeong di Laut Kuning. Saat menjalankan tugas biasanya, kapal patroli Korea Selatan 357 tiba-tiba diserang secara mendadak.
